Atkins Bagels and Bread: The Inspiration for Other Similar Baked GoodsThe Atkins diet introduced by the late Dr. Robert Atkins is perhaps the most popular among all the low carbohydrate diets. It took the public by storm in the late 1990s and early 200s and to meet public demand, food products like Atkins bagels and bread were created. Unfortunately, Atkins Nutritionals Inc. had to file for bankruptcy in 2005 and when the company restructured, bagels and breads were not on their product list anymore. However, there are a number of other companies now that offer similar products, to the relief of low carb dieters. Most likely inspired by the defunct Atkins bagels and bread (which used to be available in rye and multigrain varieties) other low carb bread products today do not include refined flour or sugar among their ingredients, unlike their regular counterparts. The low carb diet holds that refined sugar and carbohydrates play a major role in triggering hunger and weight gain; thus, foods containing these ingredients are heartily discouraged. Take a look at low carb bread recipes online and you will see that instead of regular white flour, various substitutes are used, such as gluten flour. You can even make your own flour substitute; just mix one cup of protein powder with half a cup of gluten flour and half a cup of ground almonds, and you’re all set to make our own reduced-carb bread. Another popular flour substitute is Atkins Nutritionals Inc.’s Quick Quisine Bake Mix. Its ingredients include wheat gluten, cornstarch, and whey protein, and it can be used to make all-time favorites like muffins, pancakes, doughnuts, cupcakes, and many more. If you would rather purchase your low carb bread and bagels ready made, you’ll find that you have a lot of options at hand because baked good companies large and small offer them in one form or another. Sara Lee’s Delightful White and Wheat Bread, for instance contain nine carbohydrates per slice, while the Right Choice Bread from Rudi’s Organic Bakery packs only seven grams per slice. Bagels, too, are widely available from many bakeries. For instance, you can check out Bagel Boss’ Poppy, Sesame, and Everything Low Carb bagels. DeepDiscountNutrition.com offers numerous variations on their 7-Grain Low Carb Bagels, most of which contain only nine grams of net effective carbs each. And Thomas’ Carb Counting Bagels are available in plain and whole wheat varieties. As we’ve seen from the examples above, just because Atkins bagels and breads are not available in the market anymore doesn’t mean that you should forswear all bread products altogether. But that doesn’t mean that you should gorge yourself on reduced-carb bread too. As in most other things in life, moderation is key, something we should all do well to remember – especially when on a diet. |
